How to Use Your Free Printable Elf on the Shelf Letter Template PDF?
- Download the PDF and open it on your computer or phone.
- Personalize if the template allows—add your child’s name, the elf’s name, or a short note about good behavior.
- Print on regular paper or cardstock for a sturdier feel. Color printers make the designs pop, but black-and-white works fine too.
- Place the letter next to the elf the night before arrival (or return) so kids find it first thing in the morning.
- Optional: Pair it with a small prop such as a candy cane, a tiny suitcase, or glitter for extra magic.
For returning elves, use the “I’m back” version. On Christmas Eve, switch to a goodbye letter so the departure feels intentional and sweet.
Quick Tips for American Families
- Most families start the elf on December 1 or the day after Thanksgiving.
- Laminate a favorite letter if you want to reuse the design next year (write names on a sticky note).
- Keep a few blank templates on hand for mid-season notes or “sorry I’m late” messages if the elf needs an excuse.
- Store the printed letters with your holiday decorations so everything is ready next November.
